I have a good friend who has been raving about Blue Apron for some time now. She had an opportunity to gift a couple Blue Apron Meals to friends and I was thrilled to be a recipient. Blue Apron is a service that delivers ready to cook meals to your door step. You do cook. It is not a prepared meal delivery service. It is a real meal prep time saver service. Say that fast three times. I came home from work last Friday and there, on my stoop, were my Blue Apron meals, ready for the making. I have to admit, it felt a little bit like Christmas. This is how it works.
- You need to select the kind of meal plan you want. i.e. meat, vegetarian etc.

The Experience. I chose a dietary plan of meat, fish, poultry and vegetarian. I chose a family plan for 4 which two meals for 4 came to $69.00. A little pricey, but that price is relative. I can see why people would LOVE THIS! I set up our delivery for Friday. You have various options. It comes in a medium sized cardboard box. I am annoyed I didn’t take a picture of the box for this blog, but my littles were playing doggie so that box went from cooler to dog house in a New York minute. The food is packed in a cooler type bag, filled with ice packs to ensure everything stays cool. The food was cold so no worries there. I made the Pork & Hominy Pozole. Um, holy fucking shit! It was ridiculously good! I actually loved the whole experience. Here is the deal. I love to cook. It is easy for me to pull something out of my A on a whim. Some people may not have that knack, or you just don’t have the time and the idea of cooking simply stresses you out. But, we all want to eat good balanced meals, right? Blue Apron is the PERFECT solution. These meals are designed to be easy, about 35 minutes of prep time and they are delicious and nutritious. I was really blown away by the quality of food as well. I got a little curious, though, and wanted to know where everything came from. In my perfect world I would eat what is in season and plucked out from the ground or raised on a farm within driving distance (a few hours at most). Some of those aspirations are challenged when you live in Chiberia. I was happy to see that they have partnered with some great farms and purveyors, albeit, they aren’t here, I was glad to see a focus on sustainability and quality seasonal produce.
The Cooking Process. Blue Apron sends your food delivery with a letter size recipe card with step by step instructions including pictures. The recipe was a cinch. I actually loved going to my fridge and cabinet, grabbing the ingredients I needed and cooking. Prep time and waste were minimal. It was nice to not have had to destroy my kitchen, too. Least favorite thing after a long day of work away from home is having to clean up the mess I make after cooking. Blue Apron= tidy kitchen. Start to finish the meal took 35-40 minutes to cook and when I tasted it, I was totally impressed. The Ryan O’Meter gave it a double eyebrow raise and two thumbs up. He’s is a man of few words and sometimes I think he is Italian with his ability to eat and communicate with only his hands. He loved it. Blown away actually. As I have mentioned, we sampled meal plans for four. I think the portions are healthy and appropriate. No complaints. The Blue Apron experience was a pleasant surprise. The process is streamline and self explanatory. From ordering to meal preparation and cooking and finally experiencing the great flavor and quality. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone. Kitchen whiz or not, making the meal was fun and stress free, the food tasted great and my family was provided nourishment. That always makes me feel good.
If you have been thinking about trying one of these food prep services out, give Blue Apron a whirl. It is worth it!
