If someone were to ask me what my favorite drink of all time was…easy. The Aperol Spritz. Let’s begin with the basics. I first tried this magical beverage in Rome back in 2011. We traveled to the motherland to wed our great friends later that trip on the island of Capri. The moment and I mean the very millisecond that that drink touched my lips, I lost my shit over it. First off, it’s hot as hell in Italy come August. The Aperol Spritz has wizardly ways of instantaneously cooling you off on the hottest of nights – you will learn this during any summer trip to Italia! To add to it, it was delicious. It has this bitter sweetness to it, along with a little bubbly compliments of the “water con gas” (aka club soda) and Prosecco. Throw in an orange twist and prepare for heaven on earth to greet your face. Tastewise it’s delicious, lookswise, it’s beautiful. Leave it up to the Italians to, of course, create a drink that is just a pretty to drink as it is to look at. And not only is the drink pretty, but you look good drinking one too! For some reason it reminds me of a mildly bitter and refreshing adult Fanta as Aperol definitely obtains a hint of orange. Being that this is the last month of summer for many of us, I think it’s time to step out of your comfort zone and try what is hands down, the best summer drink of all time.
What is Aperol? Why thank you for asking! It is a beautifully vibrant, orange Italian aperitif. You may be more familiar with it’s sister bottle, Campari, which is a bit darker in color and more bitter than Aperol. It has an alcohol content of 11%, but when combined with Prosecco, that percentage goes up! And what is an aperitif you are wondering? Well, the Italians are geniuses and came up with alcoholic beverages to drink before a meal to get your appetite ready to roll. Worry not, there is a digestif as well for after the meal. Brilliant.
Let’s cut to the chase and get to how to make an Aperol Spritz. Part of the beauty of this drink is how easy it is to make and how little you need. Here’s your quick list of ingredients: Aperol, Prosecco, club soda, orange wedge and a wine glass with a lot of ice. Throw in a straw if you’re looking to get them down without ice splashing in your face.
Steps to making the perfect spritz:
1. Fill up your glass with a lot of ice. More than you think.
2. Pour in about 1/4 the glass with Aperol. The Mister Project and I like them heavier on the Aperol side so we go with a bit more, you can experiment.
3. Fill almost the rest of the glass up with Prosecco.
4. Splash a bit of club soda at the top and garnish with an orange wedge (feel free to squirt that sucker in there too).
5. Admire it in all it’s glory…then stir, sip and freaking enjoy!!!!
Go ahead. Have a closer look at this sunset of a drink. PERFECT for a hot summer day.
Now there is a reason why I can be spotted all over the place with an Aperol Spritz in hand….because it’s GD spectacular. Here I am in Rome, 2011. Experiencing one of my very first AP’s. Can you see the look of dumbstruck love in my eyes? One of the many reasons I can’t stop going back to the motherland….
This here is last August in Siena when Anthony and I went to see our wedding photographer (best photog in all the land!) and to experience The Palio. It was hot as hell that week, many spritzes were had by all! This photo was in my favorite travel photos round up – check it out!
And finally, this was our most recent trip to NYC. That’s the thing about the Aperol Spritz, cities all over the world have caught on to this Italian delicacy…praise the Aperol gods. Why is TMP flexing???
Ok TSPeeps, now is the perfect time of year to try of the most glorious drinks of all times! Let me know how it goes. Salute!!!
What is your summer go to drink….do tell!
Love it. Live it. Share it.
