The other day I was watching Orange Is The New Black (best show ever, by the way) and one jail mate walked in on her cellmate meditating. Which of all the things people walk into on this show…meditation is the the least of her worries. She asked her what she was doing and her cellmate gave it to her straight, “I’m trying to get some god damn relaxation”. I loved that line! But what I loved more was bringing the idea of meditation to the masses. What better way than show the benefits of tuning in, than having a character on one of the most watched television series of the summer sitting quietly in her prison cell. Brilliant.
Sometimes when people hear the word “meditation”, it freaks them out. The idea of sitting quietly for 5-20 minutes a day can be intimidating for some and difficult to find the time for others. But believe it or not, there is a slue of very famous and VERY successful people who meditate regularly and have shared how they have benefited from it. From romcom it girl, Jennifer Aniston to shock jock and secret crush Howard Stern, many of our most famous celebs are getting down and dirty with meditation. And why wouldn’t they? Being hugely successful and insanely busy can cause anyone to tweak out. Taking the time to zone in can and will most likely greatly benefit anyone who takes the time to do so. And even though we’re not all hopping on private jets, traveling the world in first class style and handling multi million dollar enterprises (and if you are, need a yoga instructor??? Pick me!) we still have stresses and nonstop lives. Personally, over a year ago I was dealing with some massive anxiety, it was awful. After several appointments, I cried out in desperation to my therapist, “what the hell can I do to get rid of this crap?!?” He looked at me and said, “meditate”. I haven’t stopped since. Can’t stop, won’t stop. But let’s hear from the pros on why these stars Om on a regular basis. I mean, clearly they’re doing something right.
PS. I put myself next to/underneath Jeff Bridges because it’s the closest I’ll ever be to him in real life. He’s my older man/hippy crush. His voice? You know exactly what I’m talking about. If you love his sexy tone as much as me, you should check out his Sleeping Tapes. It’s basically him talking to you thru relaxation. It’s super chill and partially trippy. Honestly, I could listen it to it all day long. #checkitout
Whether you’re new to meditation or have been doing it for ages, Simply Being is my go to app to tune in. I love the musical options, time settings and guided or unguided meditations. Also, you should totally download Oprah and Deepak’s meditation app and join the 21 day challenge which starts on July 13. Get er done.
Everyday I take anywhere from 2 – 10 minutes to get in the zone. My technique is simple, I breath in and out thru my noise as I count to ten. Inhale, 1…Exhale, 2…Inhale, 3…etc. Start back at one. If your mind wanders, let the thought leave just as easily as it came in and then stop and start at one again. Stop what you’re doing right now and try it. Close your eyes and listen.

Love it. Live it. Share it.
