Just the other day I was sitting with my friend Maryclare telling her that my sisters and I have never been closer. To be fair, we are coming in hot from a sisters night in the city, but in general, I am feeling particularly in tune with them all individually and as a foursome. Like most families, we go through our ups and downs, challenging times and freaking laugh so hard, pee in your pants times. This past weekend was one of those latter times. Celebrating the moms in our family usually meant we would plan a family get-together or better yet, a girl’s day out. Come on, who doesn’t love a day out with the girls? No kids, no sperm donors, just the ladies. It’s 100% necessary. These days our mom can’t do a girl’s day out, so we decided as her daughters, that we’d do a sisters night in the city on Saturday in honor of the moms and then would spend time with Junebug in the comfort of her own home for Mother’s Day. In other words, we were long overdue for some quality sister time and this was the perfect excuse to plan a sisterly city getaway. Now, knowing that all of our readers don’t know us all personally, I have made a graphic to help you navigate who is who and our personalities.
Okay, so to a degree, that explains Michelle, Nicole, Andrea and I. Each of us possess certain characteristics that the others don’t have, which helps balance out our sisterhood and our humor. I mean, Michelle is totally Sophia. Yes, for obvious reasons, she is the oldest of the clan, but she is also sometimes sassy and often the wisest of the bunch, just like Sophia. Plus, if you look at the very first photo of Sophia laughing…yeah, that’s what Michelle looks like when she laughs really hard. The resemblance is uncanny. Then there is Blanche. Nicole is 100,000% Blanche. Keen on saying inappropriate things at inappropriate times, Nicole and Blanche are kindred spirits. Andrea may not love that she is Dorothy (who would?), but she is way more Dorothy than she is Rose so she doesn’t really have a choice. Like Dorothy, Andrea is both strong and grounded and basically doesn’t take any shit from anyone. Lastly, we have Rose. I didn’t totally lose in the who’s who of The Golden Girls. I mean, if I have to be a half wit, ding dong from a television show, I want it to be Betty freaking White. Am I right? Nicole would argue that it’s better to be Blanche, but Betty is a legend people, let’s be honest. I guess you can say we’re the modern day Golden Girls, except we’re thirty years younger, and we are not the subject of a TV sitcom.
We decided to stay overnight at the Langham hotel – one of Chicago’s most beautiful hotels. It’s chic, fancy, and sparkly – all things girly. The lobby alone is worth seeing. Once all checked in, Nicole, Andrea and I hit up their stunning Chuan Spa. It basically feels as if you’ve been teleported to an Eastern urban oasis of tranquility. I could have actually stayed in there for hours as I love hopping from steam room to sauna to cold shower and back again. We enjoyed some vino, services and sister chat…it was exactly what the doctor ordered. It was eventually time to shower up, dress up and head to the bar on the second floor for drinks before dinner. Travelle is an awesome bar. I know this to be true because Nicole didn’t send back her drink. She does that from time to time when she is displeased with the ol’ barkeep. But not this time. This time she loved her gin martini and there would be no sending it back. Phew! I also know this to be true because they have the most phenomenal vinegar and sea salt corn nuts. Yes, I just said corn nuts, but they were the best I’ve ever had. After I ate about three small bowls of salty nuts and drank two glasses of delicious rosé, Michelle arrived and we headed to Nico Osteria for dinner. Now, I did have a bit of a Rose moment on the way to dinner. As we were walking to dinner I was jokingly showing off that I can walk and balance on the ball mounds of my feet over the grated sidewalks so that my high heel didn’t get stuck. I kept saying “I can walk on my ball mounds, I can walk on my ball mounds”, when all of the sudden I stepped into a pot hole. I felt my ankle literally almost break off when I knew I only had one option to not die so I grabbed onto Andrea. Right onto her left boob and shirt and almost completely pulled it off. Thankfully she is strong as hell and saved my sorry ass. She’s so good of a sister she wasn’t even mad that I almost murdered her outfit. Thank you sister.
Dinner at Nico Osteria was exceptional. Hands down delicious. Their bread service is especially noteworthy and make sure you get the octopus carpaccio if you want to be rocket blasted into culinary heaven. Oh and the tuna orecchiette? It is mind blowing. The server knew it was a special night out for us so he gave us everything on the dessert menu. Bless that sweet child. It was so refreshing to sit with my sisters, have some heart to hearts and laugh. It reminded me how necessary nights with my sisters from the same mister are. Plus, I can’t lie, my sisters are fun. Like really fucking fun. We laughed so hard, for sure at least two sisters peed in their pants. I’m a crier. I laugh so hard I cry, that happened on multiple occasions. We ended the night with more laughing and a sleepover. It was the best way to celebrate my sisters who are exceptional moms, sisters and daughters. Without them….shit. As Michelle would say, I’d be fucked without them and that’s the truth. We are a very strong and committed unit that work really hard to care for our mom. I would want nothing more in the world than for our mom to be with us during our girl’s day, but having my three sisters is the best gift my mom has ever given me. She gave us a lifetime of laughter, sisterhood and friendship. She gave us support when she can’t give it to us herself. Given our situation, we are four extremely lucky women. I think from here on out Mother’s Day for me, will also be known as Sister’s Day because they too deserve to be celebrated. Plus, it’s the perfect excuse to enjoy some time with my three best friends.
Thank you to my mama for giving me three cool ass girls for my girl gang. I think she would be very proud of the sisterhood she passed down to us. XO
Love it. Live it. Share it!
