There was a time when I’d wake up Christmas morning to the most glorious display of twinkling Christmas lights, gifts wrapped with the crispest of corners and fluffiest of ribbon, and my stocking stuffed to the brim with thoughtful and unique trinkets. It was called “my childhood.” A few years ago, I awoke to a slack stocking stuffed with pieces of paper: a printed gift certificate for a pedicure, a voucher for a walking food tour and a gift card to Lululemon. I love you, husband, and those gifts are so thoughtful, but somehow don’t hold the same amount of luster.
I consider gift giving to be a true art that has the power to make someone feel special. My sister is one of the best gift-givers ever. Every birthday or holiday comes with a specially curated gift that fits me. She knows my style and my interests and has the profound ability to purchase something that she knows I will love but wouldn’t necessarily purchase for myself: the key to a gift that is truly treasured.
Some of my most favorite gifts I’ve received have contributed to my well being and/or the essence of hygge (pronounced hoo-ga), the Danish concept of coziness (and my biggest obsession, as of late). In my most recent post, I explained how hygge can show up in many ways: a cozy atmosphere, a gathering of friends, a quiet afternoon with a book and cup of cocoa. Basically, a scenario that encourages simplicity, comfort, and the ability to be completely absorbed in the present moment. If you want to be the winner of “Best Gift-Giver Ever” this holiday season, consider some of my favorite products below that spark the power of hygge. Pick one item to gift as a special treat, pair with another item or two to create an experience or, if you’re like me, now nearing mid-thirties, and the gifts you get consist of checks from your mom and paper from your spouse, then I give you full permission to snatch up one of these bad boys below, wrap it in the prettiest paper from Paper Source, and place it lovingly beneath your tree as a gift to yourself. And then go hygge it up in January, friends—the drabbest month of the year….when we could all use a bit of coziness.
The Ultimate Hygge Gift Guide
Gift one or a few of these for the ultimate cozy experience, perfect party accessory, or unique treat.
The Warm & Cozy Mug – curl up in a corner and fill it up with…
Mindy’s Hot Chocolate – my fave mix from one of my fave Chicago restaurants. The Medium flavor is the best. And throw in some mallows too! While sipping cocoa, consider pairing with…
Breakfast with Buddha – cute and engaging story about a road trip with a Rinpoche. It’ll warm your heart and make you think. OR, you could gift the book that inspired it all…
The Little Book of Hygge – it will light up your life. You could also light up…😂
Demilune Candle – Moss Garden is my fave scent.
Cozy Chair Cover – I am highly considering putting this on my chair at work. Would that be weird?!
The Bubble Bath That Will Change Your Life – trust me.
Table Topics – great game to spark conversation and connection. Many themes available.
French Kitchen Marble Slab – perfect for rolling pastry or could be used as a base for a beautiful charcuterie board.
Maple Cream – slather on some good toast, drizzle over cookies, eat it by the spoonful.
United by Blue – I can’t decide which product to suggest because they are all amazing. Socks, sweatshirts, hats, mugs…it’s the website of coziness.
My Sweater Obsession – Madewell is magic.
Stocking – Please. Do not stuff it with paper.
