When it comes to making a strong, positive impression there are a few tricks that psychologists swear by.
In this episode, we covered tried and true ways to help you get strangers you meet at networking events and social events to like you in an instant as well as tips to help you be a better listener.
Here’s what we learned can have people liking you instantly:
Ask the person you’re talking to for a favor.
Use the person’s name when speaking.
Take a moment and pause before you respond to somebody.
Speak to them with your palms facing forward.
Notice the small details of the conversation and give details.
Now when it comes to listening, this requires a lot of practice and patience.
According to Cash Nickerson, author of The Samurai Listener:
“Listening is also important because all people want is love and respect; they want to spend time with people who listen. Good listeners tend to get advanced and promoted,” says Nickerson. “There’s no greater feeling than when someone listens. Not just pay attention but listened.”
He also says:
“It’s self-awareness–and a lot of biting your tongue.”
To be in the moment and completely mindful of who you’re speaking with and what they’re saying has so much to do with being a better listener. In fact, Cash offers a wonderful acronym to help you practice being the best listener you can be.
