It’s hard to believe November has arrived, but alas, tis the season to give thanks. I’ll try to convey thankfulness without sarcasm here, but the truth is, the season of thanks can sometimes feel like the season of added stress.
Between the extra-long to-do lists, additional expenses, and for many a side of grief or hardship one might be navigating this holiday season, this time of year can be taxing.
As soon as that clock strikes midnight on November 1, my throat gets a little tighter. Although this time of year comes with so much to look forward to, additional stress is oftentimes the unfortunate Thanksgiving side nobody wants.
I’ll take all the stuffing November wants to give me, but please, hold the stress.
However, even with the added anxiety, this month moves me in a way no other month ever will. I live for all the things November. The crisp fall air makes my heart skip a beat. Even autumn apparel fills me with joy. Turkey traditions and cozy days watching football are some of November’s greatest delights.
In order to enjoy those moments, stay grounded, and truly be grateful, a commitment to daily self-care is imperative. If anything, it’s worth the attempt to pencil in something to take our minds off the holiday hustle and bustle, even if it’s for ten minutes a day.
I’m so excited to share some of the tricks I have shoved up my old lady sweater sleeve to help you revel in the beauty that surrounds you this holiday season with a healthy dose of mindfulness.
Ok, let’s dive in!
When it comes to mindfulness, think ritual. We all have them. What is the one thing you replicate daily that makes you feel good and somewhat balanced?
Maybe you love to cook or perhaps your nighttime skincare routine is your thing. You might be a runner or maybe crafting lights you up. It could be your everyday shower. Whatever that one thing is, that is your ritual. The key, especially during the holiday season, is leaning into your ritual a bit stronger.
My morning ritual involves a cup of coffee in the dark by candlelight before the house has risen. Come Daylight Savings when my circadian rhythm hasn’t quite adjusted to the time change, I get down and dirty while the moon is still out. Those moments of alone time are glorious and set the tone for my day ahead.
The trick is focusing on the details. Notice the way your hot coffee feels in your hands while holding your mug. Slow down and pay attention to the process of showering while taking a few mindful breaths.
Perhaps you already meditate, and if you do, props! Meditation is so good for our mental health along with our brain health. But just in case you don’t, and I have piqued your interest, download the app, Insight Timer. It’s my favorite mindful tool. There are a plethora of teachers offering thousands of free, guided meditations. Dig around and find someone that speaks to you. I love Sarah Blondin.
Beyond that, we are so lucky to live in a beautiful community where we are just mere steps away from nature. Bemis Woods Trails are in our actual backyards and have been my saving grace this past year. Long walks in the woods are the perfect anecdote to busy minds and long holiday to-do lists. It’s nature’s medicine.
One last idea, tune into our podcast, Cozy Conversations with The Sister Project to help take your mind off of the holidays for a moment. It’s a lovely accompaniment to your walk in the woods or while folding laundry. It’s fun, informative, and it’ll make you laugh. And like they say, laughter is the best medicine.
Wishing you and your family a cozy, and less stressful, holiday season ahead.
Until next month….
Stay cozy,
Michelle
