Of all the finishes that make a house a home, good lighting is essential.
Some call lighting the home’s jewelry as it is the final touch and the thing that ties it all together.
But lighting goes far beyond the look as its dual purpose is both aesthetic and functional.
Sure, a sexy fixture can really make a statement, but at the end of the day, how does the lighting make you feel?
As a self-proclaimed cozy seeker, and being raised partially in the dark, lighting is particularly important to me.
I want to be able to see crisp clean pages of my book without straining my eyes and I also yearn to feel calm and cozy AF.
There is nothing worse than lighting so bad it makes you sad.
Since it is your lucky day, and also a part of my job to bring you the 4-1-1 on such things, I sought out an expert from our incredible partner in La Grange, Hortons Home Lighting, to shed some light on, well, light.
Here are 5 lighting tips to really help you set the mood.
When it comes to good lighting, size matters!
These days, larger fixtures are trending, and in this case, bigger doesn’t always mean better.
Take special care in choosing the right size for lights going over tables and islands.
You don’t want something ginormous in a space that doesn’t require it or the ladder. The size has to be just so.
What wattage gives cozy vibes? That is the question.
Experts recommend using a 2700 kelvin color bulb. This is the closest LED color temp to incandescent and it has a warmer glow to it.
Warm = cozy.
Don’t be a dummy. Get the dimmer.
Ladies and gentlemen! I give you lighting’s most practical accessory, the dimmer!
These little gadgets make lights bright for reading, working, or cooking, and when it’s time to relax, just turn down the dimmer, man. You can even install a dimmer on a lamp.
LEDs have come a long way!
They aren’t all the super bright white ones we are always thinking of. You can use a 2700 (warm white) or even a 3000k (s0ft white) bulb to create a cozy vibe that offers enough light too.
I love lamp.
As it turns out, lamps are also a great way to have some accent lighting when the overhead light isn’t available or, you just want to create a more cozy vibe.
At Horton’s, they say that “lighting is the jewelry in the room” and lamps are a lighting option that can add a little texture and personality.
