What Is HYGGE?

HYGGE. WHAT DOES THIS FUNNY LITTLE WORD MEAN, ANYWAY?

Good question. Let’s start with the basics. We pronounce hygge “HOO-GAH”, but you can
pronounce it however your heart desires.

Hygge is a Danish word that means the art of living in coziness.

It’s a lifestyle concept that describes the way one feels when they are surrounded by things (ie. smells, textures, tastes, sounds, people) that make them feel delighted and, for lack of a better word, cozy. Hygge is synonymous to happiness.

Traditionally, hygge is a lifestyle that lends itself to smaller groups or solo moments. It’s about connecting. Connecting with other humans, yourself, nature, and moments. To hygge is to enjoy the simple pleasures in life. Whether those pleasures come in the form of a warm chocolate croissant, cold beer with a friend, walk in the woods, or a home cooked meal with your people, these moments in life are absolutely vital and we all need to have more of them.

As Americans, it is our culture to overwork, overschedule and overload ourselves with responsibilities leaving us with little to no time for anything else. Many of us are living to work not working to live--not getting enough vacation time. These days, more moms are working than ever before, making the struggle of balancing work and home life very, very real. In the midst of all these added stresses and responsibilities, we are forgetting about the importance of moments. We owe it to ourselves to find our hygge and to slow the heck down. After all, we all only live once.

Having been raised in a hygge household, we know the importance of gathering, sharing a meal and connecting with your tribe. Even while living in this fast-paced world, we know it’s our mission to share, teach and inspire you with ways to live your most present, mindful, and happy life. A more hygge life, if you will.

We invite you to get your very own Hygge Project on; to find gratitude in the simple things in life and embrace the moments spent with your loved ones. And, whatever you do, eat the damn cake. We look forward to seeing how you hygge.

Stay cozy,

LAUREN & MICHELLE

Hygge is humble and slow. It is choosing rustic over new, simple over posh, and ambience over excitement. In many ways, hygge might be the Danish cousin to slow and simple living.
